hi Dan maybe you can get the hierarchy you want by using folders and sub folders?

You can associate all fields to a product and create folder levels
in each product/vendor database; but there is (to my knowledge) one product type 'item'
or one manufacturer part # per product.  These 'products' can be 'nested' into many levels of folders, but ultimately the product database is pretty flat and the folders are just a 'reference' of organisation.

I'm not sure I understand your question.

Can you expand? What are you trying to achieve here?
